8.2 How do earthquakes help make images of Earth's interior?
- Earthquakes create waves
- Surface waves - some undulate up and down, others side to side. As these pass through soil, rock, buildings, etc. they exhibit plastic behavior. Things bend and/or break and stay that way.
- Body waves - mainly elastic, two main types.
- P (primary) waves, particles are displaced in the same direction by compression. Can affect all materials.
- S (secondary) waves, particles are displaced at right angles to the wave direction. Cannot affect fluids, so cannot transmit through liquids or gas.
