8.1 How do geologists know about rocks in Earth's interior?
- Some rocks seen at Earth's surface originated at 10-50 km depth, with some few from as far as 150 km depth. These rocks are generally felsic continental crust or mafic oceanic overlying a peridotite mantle.
- The rocks near Earth's surface cannot explain the planet's density. The high density (and wobbles) indicate a core material that is much denser than peridotite.
