7.7 How is the absolute age of a rock determined?
- Radioactive dating methods provide absolute ages of minerals using the parent (unstable)/daughter (stable) isotope ratios.
- Absolute ages are determined for the geologic time scale by combining radioactive-dating with relative-dating. Age-diagnostic fossils define time-scale boundaries in sedimentary rocks.
- The oldest Earth rock measured thus far is 4.030 billion years old and the oldest mineral 4.4 billion years. Moon rocks and meteorites have been measured even older. The current estimated age of Earth is 4.50 0.06 billion years.
