7.6 How have scientists determined the age of Earth?
- Using the Salty Ocean as a Clock
- Irish geologist John Joly used the salt of the ocean and the knowledge of how it got there under uniformitarian conditions (rain, weathering, etc.) and arrived at an 80-100 million year old Earth. We now know that lots of salt is locked in solid form, and that the ocean has more water than he estimated.
