6.4 What is the role of fluid in metamorphism?
- Fluids, present in the original rock or introduced from magma or high-temperature dehydration and degassing reactions, create metamorphic rocks with water and gas molecules.
- Metamorphic reactions take place faster and at lower temperature in the presence of water than under dry conditions.
- Movement of fluid during metamorphism delivers some ions and takes others away in solution so that the metamorphic rock is different from the parent rock.
