5.5 How are sedimentary rocks classified?
- Origin, texture, and composition of sediment grains are used to classify sedimentary rocks
- Clastic rock names rely first on grain size, and then on rounding, sorting, etc.
- Clastic sediment composition reveals the rock from which a sediment derives, as well as the amount of weathering.
- Chemical/biogenic sedimentary rocks consist of precipitated minerals from either biological or inorganic processes, or both.
