5.5 How are sedimentary rocks classified?

• To name a clastic sedimentary rock consider:
• The dominant grain size
• The range of grain sizes (degree of sorting)
• The extent the particles are rounded
• Note of clarity: clay is both a term referring to the class of minerals (e.g., bentonite is a clay) and a size category that refers to a small size range that includes most clay particles.
