5.1 How and why do rocks disintegrate to form sediment?
- Weathering is the interaction of the geosphere with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere
- Physical weathering disaggregates rocks mechanically via ice, salt, and thermal action
- Chemical weathering involves chemical reaction with minerals, water, and oxygen. This may cause dissolution, oxidation, hydrolysis, or a combination of these.
