4.3 Where do igneous rocks appear in a landscape?
- General Features
- Opening at the summit of a volcano
- Crater - steep-walled depression at the summit, generally less than 1 km in diameter
- Caldera - a summit depression typically greater than 1 km in diameter, produced by collapse following a massive eruption. Caused by withdrawal of magma from the chamber underneath. When this happens, the weight of the volcano above the empty chamber causes collapse.
- Vent - opening connected to the magma chamber via a pipe
