Contents of Density, Specific Gravity
2.1 What are the properties of minerals?
- Density - mass divided by volume
- E.g., grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3), pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3)
- Specific gravity - weight of matter in air divided by the weight of an equivalent volume of water at 4oC
- A weight:weight ratio so no units (dimensionless)
- Numeric values of density = specific gravity
- E.g., 2.65 g/cm3 2.65 specific gravity
