15.6 How do mass movements sculpt the landscape?

• Mass movement and mountains go together
• Mountain uplift increases land-surface elevation and makes land more susceptible to mass movement (all other factors being equal).
• High M earthquakes triggering landslides are common in active mountains.
• Mountain building brings metamorphic rocks with foliation planes to the surface—potential rupture surfaces.
• Mountains get heavy rain/snow, so moisture present in abundance.
• High elevations commonly get low temperatures, so freeze/thaw processes active.
