15.4 When do mass movements occur?

Illustration of how liquefaction occurs.

When dry, shaking regolith results in compaction and generally a more stable mass of particles. However, we can see, when shaken, contact is broken and allows saturated particles to behave as a fluid. This is known as liquefaction. This liquefied ground can move downslope, or can be a hazard to constructs like a building sitting atop.
