13.4 Why does sea level change?

Cross section shows how the same volume of water can cover a larger surface area if the basin becomes more shallow.

Change the shape of the container

When ocean basins fill due to erosion, then the water level in the basin must rise. There have been times in Earth's history when there is evidence of sea-level rise when glaciers were not an active force.

Plate tectonics too can change the shape of ocean basins (see Fig. 12.16).
