12.5 What is the evidence that plates slide past one another at transform plate boundaries?
- How about transforms that traverse spreading ridges?
- Two hypotheses on how these occur:
- 1) displacement should be right-lateral, because the plates move away from one another along the segmented, divergent boundary. (See Fig. 12.29.)
- 2) the transform is active only between the ridge segments that it connects. Farther out, the segments are moving at the same velocity as one another, and are part of the same plate.
