• Oceanic lithosphere is stronger than continental lithosphere because dry mantle rocks composing most of the oceanic lithosphere are stronger than wet crustal rocks that compose a large part of continental lithosphere.
• The lower continental crust is probably weak in comparison to the upper crust above it, and to the upper mantle below it.
