10.2 What does mantle convection look like?
- Heat flow - measured on continents over 100 years ago
- Low fluxes of heat escaping Earth's crust
- If derived from radioactive decay in crustal rocks, there should be more heat from continents than from ocean crust as it is thicker
- Measurements across both continents and oceans indicate much is escaping heat from the interior as ocean fluxes are larger
- Thus, heat flows from the mantle
