10.1 How does convection work?

• We see then from the lava lamp that density varies due to heat input of the two liquids.
• These liquids also differ in viscosity or resistance to flow.
• Conduction in this system is also slow, otherwise the top and bottom would be the same temperature.
• Note this system requires all three types of energy transfer:
• Conduction at the base
• Convection up through the column
• Radiation at the top to lose heat
