1.5 What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics?
- A "new" theory (c. 1960s)
- The solid lithosphere of Earth is composed of a number of plates.
- Over time, and due to processes described in detail in Part II, these plates move.
- Some plates grow while others shrink, maintaining a balance of forces and area across Earth's surface.
