1.2 Why study geology?

• Geologic studies are the center of interdisciplinary efforts to understand Earth systems: the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.
• Geologic knowledge is required to locate natural resources, and to avoid or diminish the effects of natural hazards.
